How to Propose an FLC
First-Year Learning Communities (FLCs) are a special type of year-long GE course. Although FLCs should be conceptualized by faculty and students as a single year-long course, FLCs consist of two semesters with A and B suffixes. The A and B components of an FLC must be submitted as separate GE courses in Curriculog because of how Curriculog links to other systems at the University (e.g. scheduling, faculty contracting, student records). The FLC syllabus and FLC Course Content form will span the full year of the FLC. These can be added to either the A or B (or both) Curriculog entries. Resources to find FLC Course Content worksheets.
Complete Form in Curriculog
- Start a GE course revision proposal in Curriculog (see How to Propose a GE course).
- Be sure to upload your FLC form (see Resources) and other associated documents. See this example FLC proposal for guidance on filling out the FLC form.
- Make sure to check the box that it is part of an FLC. Include in the justification the other GE course and transition course associated with your FLC.
- Start a second GE course revision proposal for the second GE course (i.e., repeat step 1).
- If you are proposing your own new 1-unit transition course start a new course proposal (not GE) in Curriculog and attach your FLC documentation there as well.
- Contact the chairs of the GE subcommittee and University subcommittee to give them a heads up that you would like to be scheduled for review. Please keep the EPC chair in the loop as well. Your GE courses (and the transition course if applicable) will route to the chair, GE Subcommittee, University Studies Subcommittee, School Curriculum Committee, Dean, and EPC. GE will look at the entire packet but only approve the GE aspects. University Studies Subcommittee will look at the whole packet but only approve the transition component.
